What makes an artist an artist? Foremost, it is the desire of having something to express. What is art if not the embodiment of someone’s message to the people?
Upon meeting Calvin Christensen, it becomes evident that there is something unique that he expresses. You begin to understand that unique quality in the intentional power of his lyrics — as influenced by his interest in the lyrical styles of Jason Mraz, Bob Dylan and Bob Marley. Calvin’s enticing songs and guitar-playing dance with the complexity and fluidity of Paco De Lucia and Andrew York. The timbre of his voice vibrates with the essence of Damien Rice and Ray Lamontagne in a way that moves you to a place of questioning, rejuvenation and splendor.
Calvin has dedicated many years to the study of music and the styles of flamenco and classical guitar. During his worldwide travels, Calvin has been tutored by the likes of Madrid-based David Serva (the subject of The Counting Crows song Mr. Jones), El Entri of Canorotto, maestro SM Davies, baroque virtuoso Joe Haggedorn, and jazz master Joel Shapira.
As a young songwriter, Calvin frequented open-mic and artist showcases in the Midwest before “graduating” to featured solo gigs as singer-guitarist in well-known restaurants and clubs in the greater Minneapolis/St. Paul area. Now residing full time on the island of Kauai, Calvin pursues his musical ambitions behind the microphone on Kauai Community Radio and many other on-island venues.
